Every day Yael K. seems to encounter another manifestation of ארץ ישראל נקנית בייסורים. Every day, she displays aplomb, humor, and an increasingly Israeli attitude. She is an inspiration for all those new Nefesh b'Nefesh olim. I think she should publish her blog in book form and give it to every oleh.

Can you please explain to this non Israeli exactly WHY the sitution must be so? Why can't Isaeli's simply act like members of the first world?
Yes, and then consider the thousands and thousands that didn't come and won't come because of it.
You know, without justifying the still exasperating state of such things here, it remains true that ארץ ישראל נקנית בייסורים and there is something grating about people who use them to justify why they won't come.
As I recall, the Levites were disenfranchised by Ezra, for exactly that reason. According to to Seder HaDorot (Halperin), the Jews of Ashkenaz were punished for using exactly that claim. While historically inaccurate, it reflects a definite trend in rabbinic literature.
Yes, I know all that, but why must we be me'hader in the yesurim? ;)
